Ice
At a time when ice was taken from New England’s lakes and rivers, Ivan Blake is among the first to participate in the interesting, and often dangerous, work of harvesting ice. Ivan is driven and finds purpose in the work. He asks nothing of the world and prefers to operate alone. When he begins harvesting ice on a private farm, Ivan accepts an invitation to supper with the farmer and his family, where he takes advantage of the home-cooked meals and tolerates the firelit familial cheer. Clara Galloway, the farmer’s daughter, is warm and charming, everything that Ivan is not. No amount of kindness, though, seems to effect Ivan’s cold exterior. Finally, the hospitality of the Galloways’ hearth and hearts begins to thaw the ice within Ivan, and he discovers that he can no longer ignore Clara’s piercing ice-blue eyes no matter how far he goes to avoid them. Pursue this unique historical fiction to the end and learn about the extraordinary beginning of the ice enterprise, and to discover whether Clara can melt Ivan's heart of ice.

About the Author
A life of adventure and magic awaited young Emily through a rich imagination and a love of books. Encouragement came from a wise elder (a fourth grade teacher) who guided Emily into a passion for writing. Her fate was sealed. Emily pursued her quest to study and learn all she could of writing and literature through her growing up years. Devouring the classics, and contemporary literature led to a longing to give a voice to the voiceless through her own fiction writing. Through Radiant Prose, Emily hopes to push back the darkness and shed golden light on the grimmest parts of the world.
Other things that pull at Emily's passion are exercise, garage sales and thrift stores, outdoor adventures, and living in the mountains with her best friend and husband, Zack!
Book Reviews
Reviews from books lovers and critics alike
"Beautifully written, eloquent and haunting. It is loaded and flawless. Questions every ounce of your humanity. So worth the read, you will not regret it."
"This book is heartbreaking and raw. In the last few years, the topic of refugees has been more and more prevalent. Brown kept me hooked by the way she decribed the characters and the family dynamic they have."
"I did not want it to end! This is a must read! I could not put it down. The author writes in such a way that it pulls you into the story. It was so real, heartbreaking and definitely pulls at your heartstrings! I highly recommend this book!"
"In reading the description for this book, I expected to be impacted by the story in some capacity. What I didn't know is that this book would stick with me months after reading it.
Emily Brown brings a fresh perspective to the table with her fiction novel No Way But Through: An American Refugee Story. The story is fast-moving, as the timeline of an American nuclear crisis would be. Brown carries readers through her story by means of time-stamped pages full of detail.
As a reader, I found myself sucked into the story with the sights, sounds, and smells described in the pages. The further you read, the more you feel like you know the characters, their personalities, and the level of despair. The tragedies that occur in the story are just a glimpse of how heart-wrenching the refugee crisis truly is.
For anyone interested in shifting their perspective to what it could be like to walk as a refugee, I highly recommend this book. Brown presents a complicated issue without an ounce of political opinion in her writing. I invite you to immerse yourself in a different world than the one you know --- I don't believe you'll regret it."
"It was so refreshing to get lost in a book again, and Ice had me captivated right away. A sweet story that will leave you satisfied. Can't wait to read more of her work!"
"This book was written with what seems a lot of thought and research went into it. It drew you into the world of the slaves and the people helping them. I totally enjoyed it. Well recommend it to many of my friends!"
